Preservation work underway at Newark Castle’s riverside wall

Visitors to Newark Castle this week may have spotted skilled masons working along the riverside wall - some even suspended over the river itself - as essential preservation efforts get underway.

They’ve started essential preservation work, which involves delicately removing and replacing loose bricks and mortar to protect the structural integrity of the wall. It’s a slow and skilled process, with a focus on keeping as much of the original material as possible.

The team is gradually making their way along the wall and will finish up by repairing the bridge at Cuckstool Wharf.

It’s all part of the exciting Castle Gatehouse Project, and we’ll keep you posted as things progress!
