Volunteering at Newark Castle

We currently have an amazing team of volunteers working behind the scenes to help bring the Castle Gatehouse Project to life. Volunteers are integral to the work we have been doing and will continue to do once the Castle reopens in 2026. Here are some of the things our volunteers have been working on so far:

Volunteer groups

Volunteer Research Group

The research volunteers have been working together since 2023, investigating historical records and unearthing stories that we can’t wait to share with visitors! They are now working on a talk about Newark Castle and the Gatehouse Project.

Oral History Team

These busy volunteers and staff meet people who want to share their castle memories, record the conversations, and transcribe the recordings for our collection.

Upcoming opportunities

In 2026 we will be looking to recruit new volunteers to be a part of the Castle experience. Those roles will include gardening volunteers, visitor welcome, tour guides and learning volunteers. Whether you are looking to meet new people, gain experience or share your knowledge we want to hear from you!

We are currently hosting a number of casual drop-in coffee mornings at Palace Theatre, where people can come and meet the team and learn more about the volunteer opportunities that will become available in 2026. If you’re interested in finding out more, please join us on the following dates between 10am and 12.30pm:

Wednesday 19 November 2025
Wednesday 3 December 2025
Tuesday 13 January 2026

Alternatively, please contact newark.castle@newark-sherwooddc.gov.uk.
